AI and the Future of Graphic Design
At Wonderland, we’re always curious about how new technologies shape creativity, especially when it comes to Artificial Intelligence.
As part of his internship at Wonderland, Graphic Design Intern Matt Conybeare shares his perspective on how AI is influencing creativity.
Graphic design is more than making something look good. It’s about communication, using images, typography and layout to share ideas and connect with people. It’s about particular insights, problem-solving and giving shape to stories that reflect a brand’s purpose. Great design connects with people on an emotional level.
AI can produce good looking visuals in seconds. But it struggles to understand a brand in the way a designer does. It can’t pick up on emotion or tone, both of which shape how people experience a brand. Design is a human process that’s driven by curiosity, intuition and context.
Rather than replacing design, AI is expanding it. It’s giving designers new ways to explore, experiment and iterate, helping ideas evolve faster and further. AI is a creative partner: a tool that helps us visualise possibilities, research intelligently and test directions early in the process. It enhances creativity, not substitutes for it.
Of course, new tools bring new questions around ownership to how we define authenticity in the design process. It’s a reminder that creativity has always been about ideas, not just the tools we use.
In visual and brand design, there’s a risk that over-reliance on AI could lead to ‘sameness’. When everyone uses the same tools in the same way, brands can quickly lose what makes them unique. A designer’s job is to push a brief, question it, interpret it and bring individuality to every idea.
AI isn’t the end of creativity; it’s a new chapter of Graphic Design. AI will become an integral part of a designer’s toolkit; just as digital software did years ago. The opportunity isn’t about replacing designers, but about helping designers do what they do best and pushing ideas and creativity. Designers will need to work collaboratively with AI and combine it with their own creativity as the most meaningful, engaging design will always come from human imagination.
As technology continues to evolve, so must design. AI is developing at an incredible pace, and what feels new today will soon become standard. The challenge and the opportunity lie in staying curious and adaptable, learning how to use these tools in ways that keep creativity fresh, human and meaningful. Design has always evolved alongside technology, and AI is simply the next step in that ongoing story.
